Choose how to take your IELTS test and book online
You can take your test on paper at one of our official test centres throughout Germany, and in Berlin either on paper or on a computer. All you need is a valid identification document and a bank card if you want to pay online.

What you need to book
1. Read the information for candidates
Download and read the Information for Candidates, which contains important information about the test format, the question types and the test results.
Please note that IELTS is not recommended for candidates under the age of 16.
2. Decide which version of the test is right for you.
There are two versions of the IELTS test:
For IELTS for UKVI, you can apply online (above) or you can download this booking form and apply at your test centre.
3. Check the IELTS test days
There are a limited number of places for all our IELTS test sessions. To make sure you get a place, we recommend that you register approx. five weeks before your chosen test date. You can use our online registration system to find up-to-date information about test dates, availability and registration deadlines.
Please note: Your Listening, Reading and Writing test will be completed on the same day. Your Speaking test may be offered:
- if your main test day is Saturday, on the same day or on the day before (Friday)
- if your main test day is Thursday, on the same day or on the day after (Friday).
You have a free choice of Speaking test dates. We will do our best to accommodate your chosen speaking test time. However, please note that your speaking test time may change due to organisational reasons. We will notify you about your final speaking test time approx. one week before your test date.
4. Register online
Use our online registration system (links at the top) to book your place on the test.
Please ensure you are able to provide the documents in step 5 and are able to pay using one of the payment methods in step 6.
5. Prepare and send your documents
Please make sure you upload all of the following documents when you register for your test:
A clear photocopy of the identification document (passport or ID card - for EU/EEA and Swiss nationals only) you indicated on the application form. The document has to be valid on the test day and must be the one you registered with in your test application.
Please also note that candidates under 18 years of age have to supply written consent by a parent or guardian in order to apply for a test place.
6. Choose your payment options
The cost of sitting a test is €234. You can pay for your test in one of the following ways:
- By credit card through our online registration systems
- By bank transfer
Our bank details will be sent to you by email if you decide to pay by bank transfer. In the REFERENCE section of your payment please write: your name and your registration Reference Number, e.g. Max Mustermann, DE708-XXXXXX-XXXX. Your reference number is a 15 digit number that starts with DE708-XXXXXX-XXXX. Once you have made the payment, please send us the bank transfer receipt with the rest of your registration documents.

7. Complete your registration
You can upload your documents online in the registration system as you register for the test. If you don’t have a scanned copy of your valid passport or ID available, you can send it to our office in Berlin per email to firstname.lastname@example.org by no later than two days after your registration.
We need to receive both your ID document and proof of payment within two working days of your online registration. Unfortunately, if we do not receive these documents within two working days your application will be cancelled.
We cannot process incomplete applications, so please make sure you have sent us all the necessary information.
Normally, the deadline for applying for a test is ten days before the test date. Always check the application deadlines on our test dates, fees and locations page.
Please note: once your application has been submitted, you cannot go back to change your details.
Copies of your results
If you would like your results to be sent to universities or other educational institutions, please enter the relevant addresses in the appropriate fields on the online registration form. We can issue a maximum of five copies per student.
8. After you register
You will receive your access to the free online preparation courses: Road to IELTS Last Minute Version and IELTS WordReady.
We will send you a confirmation approximately one week before the test date giving you the start time of your test and the venue address.

IELTS is designed to be a fair test and your English language ability will be assessed objectively, regardless of any special needs that you may have.
We can help you with any special arrangements you require for your test. For example, we offer support for people with visual impairments, hearing difficulties and dyslexia.
Please contact us three months in advance of your test date to find out how you can apply for special arrangements. Should you require extra time in the test, or a separate room, we can offer these arrangements in Berlin and Cologne only.
Refunds and transfers
Before the test date
For cancellations up to five weeks before the test date, you will receive refund, minus an administration charge of 25% of the test fee.
To cancel your test date up to five weeks before the test date, please download and complete our Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form and send it via post or email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please note that you must sign the form.
After the test date
If an original medical certificate confirming illness on the date of the test is provided within five working days of the test date, together with the Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form, the fee is refundable, minus an administration charge of 25% of the test fee. Only original sick notes in German or English are accepted. If we have not received both the required documents at our office in Berlin by the fifth working day after the test, you will be marked as absent and forfeit all claims. Copies sent by fax or e-mail are not accepted. We recommend sending medical certificates by registered mail.
Please note that we do not accept sick notes issued by family members.
Requests for transfer of the test date are accepted up to five weeks before the test date and are free of charge. Please note that the new date must be within three months of the original date. In cases of illness, transfer is possible within five weeks of the test if an original medical certificate is provided within five working days of the test date, together with the Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form.
Candidates who receive a transfer to a new test date (either before the test or due to illness) and who are ill on the second test date are not entitled to a refund of the test fee nor to any further transfer to a new test date.
Please note that refunds can take four to six weeks to process.
