Young choreographer Oona Doherty from Northern Ireland gives the Germany premiere of her piece of art Hard To Be Soft – A Belfast Prayer at Tanz im August, Berlin's international festival for contemporary dance presented by HAU Hebbel am Ufer. The festival takes place four weeks (9 till 31 August) and invites the audience to join productions of international stars, newcomers and choreographs of the Berlin scene bring their works to locations all over the city, among them numerous world and Germany premieres – just like Oona's.
Oona Doherty is a London School of Contemporary Dance graduate, also studied at the University of Ulster and at Laban Dance Centre London and has received several awards for her perfomances such as the Best Performer Award at the Dublin Tiger Fringe Festival in 2016 or the Total Theatre Dance Award from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017.
In the four-part dance performance Hard To Be Soft – A Belfast Prayer, Oona Doherty takes us to today's Belfast illuminated by the condition of Northern Ireland from various perspectives. She has based Hard to be Soft on the experiences and realities of people living in the city today starring a group of young confident women, two men wrestling with one another and thus unifying opposites like longing and toughness, hopelessness and utopia.
