University of Bradford

The University of Bradford received our Charter in 1966, becoming the 40th University in the UK. However, our origins lie in technology as The Mechanics Institute, founded in 1832. We have recently spent over £120 million on refurbishing our campus and student facilities, most recently building the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics focused STEM Centre for £1.5 million. The University has also been rated “First Class” by the People & Planet Green League 2013, who consider us the “Greenest in Yorkshire”.

Teaching and research are organised into five Faculties located in two campuses in the city of Bradford, one of the ten largest cities in the UK. The Faculty of Management & Law is located near the idyllic Lister Park approximately 5km from the city centre. The Faculties of Engineering & Informatics, Life Sciences, Health Studies and Social Sciences are situated on our main campus, which is right in the heart of Bradford.

The University has a commitment to provide education with practical application and 100% of our undergraduate students gain exposure to the world of work. To this end over 70% of our courses are accredited, recognised or approved by a Professional, Statutory or Regulatory Body. Our School of Management is proud to be in an elite group of less than 1% of Business Schools in the world who hold the triple accreditations of Equis, AMBA and AACSB, often referred to as the “Triple Crown”. We also offer placement opportunities and many sandwich courses and the opportunity to study abroad through our worldwide exchange links and our membership of ISEP and Erasmus+.

We also pioneer cutting-edge research in world-class facilities with real-world applications. 80% of the research carried out by academics at the University of Bradford was rated as “international” or “world-leading” in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), a nationwide survey of the strength and quality of research at UK universities. Our high-tech learning environment is open to all students to encourage you to succeed with interactive e-learning on our “digital campus” alongside traditional lecture and laboratory based learning.

All international students are guaranteed a place in the University’s BREEAM award-winning halls of residence, The Green, ranked top 10 in the UK for accommodation quality and accommodation cost in the International Student Barometer Autumn 2015 wave.

Recently the University of Bradford has been rising sharply in the rankings, jumping 20 places to 52nd place in the Guardian University 2017 league table (one of the biggest rises in the UK) with six of our subjects rank top 20, including Film and Media Studies, Forensic Science and Archaeology, Civil Engineering and Chemistry. And Chemical Engineering and Nursing and Midwifery are in the top 10. In the Complete University Guide 2017 we have risen 10 places to 53rd with five of our subjects in the UK top 10: physiotherapy, forensic science, ophthalmics, occupational therapy and medical technology.

University of Bristol

The University of Bristol is the 41st best university in the world (QS World University rankings 2016) and is one of the most popular universities in the UK.

Associated with 12 Nobel Prize winners and boasting Winston Churchill as the ex-Chancellor (1929-1965), the University of Bristol is a powerhouse of teaching and research. The University of Bristol is a member of the elite Russell Group of UK research-intensive universities and the Worldwide Universities Network, a grouping of research-led institutions of international standing. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the most recent UK-wide assessment of research quality, conducted by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, nearly 83% of research at Bristol was awarded either the top 4* rating, defined as ‘world leading’, or the 3* rating, classified as ‘internationally excellent’.

Our researchers tackle some of the world’s most urgent issues in the areas of health and disease, climate change, food security, energy and social justice. The University has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education – the highest accolade for any academic institution – in recognition of its leading-edge research in obstetric and neonatal practice, which has made a positive difference to mothers and babies throughout the world. The University is made up of 25 academic schools, organised into six faculties: Arts; Engineering; Medical and Veterinary Sciences; Medicine and Dentistry; Science; and Social Sciences and Law and has approximately 14,000 undergraduates and 6,000 postgraduate students from more than 120 countries.

The city of Bristol is also a wonderful place to study. Crowned European city of the Year (2009) and European Green Capital for 2015 Bristol has also won plaudits in the national press with The Sunday Times’ Best Places to Live in Britain, naming Bristol as the ‘best city in the UK to live in’ (March 2014).

City life in Bristol has also been voted the best in Britain in a major survey of 20,000 university students across the country. The University of Bristol won the ‘City Life’ category at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards (April 2015).

Nicknamed ‘The San Francisco of the UK’ by the locals, Bristol is a haven for the arts (Banksy), music, festivals, culture, history, shopping and boasts one of the best retention rates of graduates in the UK.

University of Central Lancashire

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in Preston was founded in 1828 as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. ‘Ex solo ad solem’, or in translation, ‘From the Earth to the Sun’, has been its motto ever since – helping people from all walks of life to make the most of their potential is what UCLan’s all about.

Today UCLan is one of the UK’s largest universities. With a student and staff community approaching 38,000 it is the fifth largest employer in the North West of England. Internationally UCLan has academic partners in all regions of the globe and it is on a world stage that the first class quality of its education was first recognised. The University has an increasingly thriving campus in Cyprus delivering UCLan programmes and original research within a UCLan environment and culture.

In 2010 UCLan became the first UK modern university to appear in the QS World University Rankings. In 2015 the Centre for World University Rankings placed UCLan in the top 3.8 percent of all worldwide universities, highlighting the progress the institution has made in providing students with real-world learning experiences and reflecting the institution’s broad pool of academic talent.

Amongst its programme portfolio of some 400 undergraduate and 200+ postgraduate courses, UCLan has been at the forefront of developing degrees in emerging disciplines such as Fashion and Forensic Science to more recent additions such as Dentistry and, new for 2015, undergraduate Medicine which is being delivered in the UK’s newest Medical School.

Aerospace Engineering is another new programme, part of UCLan’s commitment to grow its portfolio of engineering-related courses, and is coupled with the development of a £30 million+ Engineering Innovation Centre (EIC). The aim is to provide a rich source of new graduates that reflect the economic priorities of the North West, the UK and indeed the global economy.

The EIC forms a key pillar of the University’s £200 million Campus Masterplan which over the next 10 years will create a world-class educational environment that blends new facilities with the creation of public, green spaces to benefit the University, the City of Preston, and the economy of the North West. UCLan’s plans are being informed by the local, regional, business and civic communities, with whom it continues to build close relationships.

Creating a remodelled campus environment will help drive UCLan’s commitment to academic excellence, striving to ensure that its teaching and learning, research and knowledge exchange activities are all recognised as being of exceptional quality. The impact is perhaps best seen in the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework: all 16 subject areas in which UCLan’s research was assessed were judged to contain ‘world leading’ quality.

The University’s reputation as a regional economy powerhouse has been boosted through its strong track record in supporting graduate business start-ups; UCLan is ranked as the leading UK university for incubated start-up businesses still active after three years of trading. It is ranked second in the UK for the number of graduate start-ups still active overall and ranked third in the UK for estimate turnover for active firms. In the last five years UCLan has helped over 1,000 students or graduates start a business or became self-employed, the second highest figure in the UK.

In the future UCLan will enhance its standing as an institution with a world-class academic reputation firmly rooted in modern-day relevance. It is a future which focuses on the provision of innovative thinking – for the real world.
