Applications now open

During the UK/Germany 2018 season of cultural events in 2018, we would like to offer up-and-coming German artists the opportunity to be our 'Artists in Residence'.

In order to showcase the best of new German talent we will:

  • be publishing and promoting the chosen artists' work to British Council and partner international online audiences.
  • As well as providing contacts with our arts network around the world, we will also be offering complimentary invites to programmed events, with all travel and expenses paid.
  • There will be the potential for online and face-to-face exhibitions at the end of the year, and all participants will be given a reference from the British Council, detailing their contribution to our 2018 arts programme.

About the opportunity

Open call for all artists

We are looking for young artists based/working in Germany to become 'UK/Germany 2018 Artists in Residence'. We are interested in engaging the following:

  • photographers
  • film/documentary makers
  • illustrator/animators/artists
  • performance poets/singers
  • interpretative dancers/choreographers
  • However, we are open to other ideas - persuade us!

Working around season themes

The 'residencies' will not be tied to any specific location. Rather, they will be based around UK/Germany 2018  events. When they are able to, artists will attend performances, exhibitions, discussions, lectures, showings, or concerts, and then produce their own artistic work/responses/interpretations to what they have experienced, in the medium of their choice. Work will reflect the UK/Germany 2018 themes:

  • Making Connections: We will gather diverse communities, cultures and all backgrounds to learn from each other and engage in artistic dialogue and active citizenship face-to-face or in virtual environments.
  • Shared Future: We will show how everybody, however diverse their backgrounds, shares the need for inclusive platforms to tell their story, perform their vision, or draw their values for a future together.
  • Next Generation: We will support young people in accessing, understanding, and creating arts and culture to form a network of change makers that embraces the diversity and digital mobility of the future.

How to apply

  • Timeline: We're looking to start working with artists as soon as possible as events will soon be beginning and we'd like them to get the most out of the season as possible.
  • Applications: To apply please send through some tasters of your work to us by email - UKGermany2018@britishcouncil.org. Please make clear what your chosen medium is and how they would like to approach the themes. The first opportunity to have your work included is late January 2018, so the first successful applicants will be working with us by then. Applications close on 31 July, 2018.
