Walberberg 2005: Whose English? |
The Walberberg Seminar offers a very special space to both its writers and its audience, a rare space where nothing to do with market forces or money or publicity, or any of the other banes of contemporary literary living, gets in the way of what it is that books do, what it is that writers do and what it is that audiences would like to discuss. Such space is getting harder and harder to find.
My visits to Walberberg have been marked by a focus of concentration and intelligence that pays dividends both to writers and to delegates, and by a sheer relief on the part of all the visiting writers I've ever spoken to about it that such a space is still there. It seems magically to send both writers and audience home renewed. It is a wonderful experience.
