Facilitating active citizenship
e-participation projects in Germany and the UK
In many European countries, various efforts have been undertaken recently to increase citizens' involvement in democratic processes.

The breath-taking development we have seen over the past two decades in of information and communication technology has lifted the previous logistic limits of those efforts, creating a whole range of options to supplement the traditional processes of representative democracy by new forms of consultation, inclusion and decision-making.

In recent years, the exploitation of those options has increased both in Germany and the UK. The common theme of the related initiatives is the aim to facilitate the active participation of the citizens in political and societal processes by means of suitable Internet tools, which is why they are often summarised under the heading of "e-participation".

In order to stimulate a German-British exchange of experience in this area, the British Council and politik-digital.de have started a joint research project earlier this year. The project's task was to provide a brief and accurate definition of "e-participation" and to compile a representative cross-section of current or recent initiatives in both countries.

The project has now been completed, and its results have been compiled in a report. You can download an English version here or a German version here.

The English version is also available in print and can be ordered from the British Council for free. For this or for any related question, please contact
