Moving between text-sculpture, photography, neon signs and video Tim Etchells’ exhibition Fog Game comprises a number of related works revolving around the theme of the future – a central motif in his œuvre. In this way Etchells explores, at a visual level, changes in the present which necessarily anticipate the future.
Each of the works presented can be read as a reflection on the human desire to predict or prepare for what is to come, evoking a mixture of anticipation and unease in relation to possible versions of tomorrow. Language itself – as cultural codes manifested in symbols or signs – also provides working material for the British artist who investigates the power of this ubiquitous communication tool. Etchells deploys stories, images and ciphers in order to invoke associations and emotions in the viewer, both drawing on and questioning the dynamic, multifaceted capacity of words and images.
Tim Etchells (*1962, lives in Sheffield) works as an artist, writer and performance-maker/director. He is cofounder and artistic director of Forced Entertainment.
