The latest threat to the UK.The English Language A new landmark report on the position of the English language in the world commissioned by the British Council shows that the global dominance of the language poses major problems for the UK. English Next, by language researcher David Graddol, demonstrates that the global spread of English, which has brought tangible benefits to the UK and other native speaking countries, will lead to serious economic and political disadvantages in the future in the UK unless plans are put in place immediately to remedy the situation. Graddol concludes that monolingual English graduates face a bleak economic future as qualified multilingual young people from other countries are proving to have a competitive advantage over their British counterparts in global companies and organisations. The British Council Germany is inviting David Graddol to give a talk and participate in a panel discussion in Germany in autumn this year. (Sent on behalf of Alison McCale, Business Manager,
Trinity College London, UK, www.trinitycollege.co.uk/tesol) A new course for teachers and teacher trainers, ICT in the Classroom, is being offered by The Consultants-E, and is quality assured and endorsed by Trinity College London. Trinity College London is a leading international examinations board providing assessments in the communicative and performing arts. All Trinity TESOL qualifications are formally accredited in England by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA), and its counterparts in Wales (ACCAC) and Northern Ireland (CEA). The ICT in the Classroom course is run fully online over 10 weeks (total 50 hours) in the virtual learning environment Moodle. It looks at a range of useful technology-related skills which are immediately applicable in the classroom, and is aimed at all teachers of English worldwide. It is envisaged both as an add-on for newly-qualified entry level teachers wishing to increase their employment opportunities in this competitive market, as well as experienced professionals looking to expand their teaching repertoire and qualifications at the same time as they gain some experience in online learning. Course participants learn about various approaches to using technology in the classroom, (such as Internet lesson planning, WebQuests, chat, and blogs) and have the opportunity to put them into practice during the course itself. The first course runs from 6 March - 14 May 2006. Further information and enrolment at: www.theconsultants-e.com/courses/trinityict/ |

(Sent on behalf of Zoe McIvor, teacher, Leipzig, zoe.mcivor@gmx.de) I am looking for contacts and information with regard to CLIL (English and science). I studied then worked as a molecular biologist for nearly 20 years but in the past 3 years or so have changed tack and now teach English in Leipzig, Germany. I specialize in teaching natural science-Ph.D. students academic English but want to use more of my science in my teaching: ideally teach science in English. I have already signed up for SAW and FACT but would very much like to know how to become involved in this kind of work here in Germany. Any information and contacts will be appreciated. I feel isolated at present as I am freelance and relatively new to the field of teaching and am apparently trying to do something different from anyone I have so far met. I am also trying to write a course book entitled "English for Scientists" as there seems to be a gap in the market - I design/adapt most of the ESP material I use. It would be great to find a like minded person to work with on this project alone. I also want to run a short course at the local VHS entitled "The natural world - biology in English"...or something similar. My dream plan is to teach people about biology outdoors, in English. Such classes would obviously lend themselves to the study of surrounding flora and fauna, which I would of course, first have to learn about. However in collaboration with others, this plunge into the unknown seems more feasible. I have a Ph.D. in molecular biology, a CELTA and a certificate in counselling skills. However, I have no PGCE and wonder if this will set me at a disadvantage. As you will gather, I have plans and ideas but lack people I can bounce them off or with whom I can work. As I am 40 and have some roots in Leipzig, I am particularly keen to make informed decisions before I rush off in one direction or another (as was my wont 20 years ago) and so would be delighted to make contact with anyone who is in this field.
