The last of the series of "Languages for Europe" conferences took place in Berlin in February 2008.

Language learning in a multilingual Europe
Berlin, 1-2 February 2008

WHAT was THE CONFERENCE ABOUT?
This conference focused on questions around multilingualism and followed up on some of the questions discussed at the 2010 event called Preparing for the world of work.

As a contribution to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue we looked at English and the learning of other languages in the wider context of today's multilingual and multicultural Europe.

The three sub-themes were

  • Languages as a tool for work
  • Language learning strategies and lifelong learning
  • Languages, mobility and migration

WHO was IT FOR?
The conference was aimed at policy makers, researchers, teacher trainers, business trainers and education managers of modern foreign languages in Germany and other European countries. Representatives from all educational sectors attended the event.

WHAT Did IT OFFER?
The event offered a platform to share visions for the future of language learning and learn about relevant research results and their implications for future education policy. Examples of existing good practice were also presented.

In addition to keynote sessions, talks, workshops and discussions there were ample opportunities for networking on an informal level. Speakers and participants from 25 countries had the opportunity to share information, catch up with existing and meet new contacts and take home insights and ideas to implement in their working context.
