A dialogue between climate science and the arts
|
 |
 |
Tipping Point is a network of climate scientists, artists and
thinkers of international reputation who have
forged an alliance because of the shared concerns
about climate change.
Over the past two years Tipping Point has
staged two residential conferences, hosted by
Oxford University’s Environmental Change Institute, (ECI) bringing together 160 eminent artists
and scientists to examine and understand
climate change and all its ramifications, - scientific,
social and cultural. Most participants found
the conference very inspirational and timely.
Building on the Oxford experience, the Potsdam
Institute, in association with Tipping Point
with Cape Farewell and the British Council, successfully hosted
participants drawn from the scientific and arts
worlds to participate in a two day conference
on 24/25 June 2007. As with Oxford, the Potsdam
event was by invitation, targeting people
of exceptional ability from Germany, the UK and
other European countries.
Attendees at Potsdam
included the Amelie Deufelhard, John Schellnhuber, Peter Brimblecombe, Carena Schlewitt, Chris Rose and Christoph Nußbaumeder.
and many more artists from across the creative
spectrum, young and old, together with individuals
of similar standing in the climate science
world. The structure of the event was carefully managed. A major part of the process
used is the technique known as Open Space,
wherein participants set and pursue the agenda
rather than having it imposed upon them.
This delivered a far greater sense of ownership
and engagement than is usual at conferences.
Date: 24 & 25 June 2007
