Cape Farewell is an awareness-raising campaign presented in Germany by the British Council in 2007. Created by British artist David Buckland, Cape Farewell aims to effect long-term change in cultural attitudes towards climate change through creating a dialogue between artists and scientists.
The core of the Cape Farewell initiative has been a series of voyages to the High Arctic. The participating artists and scientists have witnessed dramatic impacts on this fragile environment and the campaign is based on their response.
At its heart was an art exhibition on show at Kampnagel in Hamburg from 21 March to 22 April 2007. The exhibition represented a unique coming together of art and science. The exhibiting artists were:
Heather Ackroyd & Dan Harvey, Kathy Barber, David Buckland, Peter Clegg, Siobhan Davies, Gautier Deblonde, Max Eastley, Nick Edwards, Gretel Ehrlich, Antony Gormley, Alex Hartley, David Hinton, Gary Hume, Ian McEwan and Michèle Noach.
It was designed to deepen the understanding of climate change through a different perspective from previous approaches to the issue. The Cape Farewell expeditions had produced highly evocative reactions which are all the more powerful for their capacity to affect the feelings of people who might not otherwise have thought about climate change.
The programme included a Music from the Arctic soundpiece from Max Eastley at the Planetarium in Hamburg on 10 April 2007, a public discussion at the Bucerius-Law-School between the novelist Ian McEwan and John Schellnhuber, the climate security counsellor of Germany, and there was a live performance by artist Will Hunt at the Westwerk on 20 April 2007, an outdoor information display of the Cape Farewell campaign on the Fleetinsel and a number of artist talks at Kampnagel. The campaign continued after the end of the exhibition.
In addition, two Hamburg school students will be on board the next sailing of the Cape Farewell vessel, the Noorderlicht, in September.
Later on in the year, a major art-science conference in the established Tipping Point series will be hosted at the Institut für Klimafolgenforschung in Potsdam on 24/25 June 2007.
